Zigbee Binding
Zigbee Binding is a technology that enables Zigbee devices, like buttons, lights, or outlets, to exchange commands directly with each other without using a central hub or coordinator. This allows faster responses and local automation even if the hub is temporarily unavailable.
How Zigbee Binding Works
Normally, a device event such as “Button 4 pressed” is sent to the controller, which then issues a command like “Turn on Light 2.” With Zigbee Binding, the device bypasses the controller entirely, sending the command directly to the target device. This reduces latency and enables immediate action.
Binding supports functions such as switching lights on/off, triggering scenes, adjusting brightness or color temperature, and controlling motorized blinds or curtains.
Device Support and Limitations
Binding is available only on a limited number of devices. Some manufacturers implement it partially, do not support it, or fail to document its availability.
Configuration and Tools
Configuring Zigbee Binding is often not possible through official apps. Third-party tools like Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA are usually required. As a result, Binding remains a powerful but underutilized feature in many Zigbee setups.
