How Mesh Networks Work
Many smart home technologies use a mesh network topology. In such networks, devices do not always communicate directly with the central controller. Instead, messages can be forwarded through neighboring devices.
This creates a web-like communication structure where each device can act as part of the routing path. Zigbee is a good example of a technology that commonly uses mesh networking.

Device Types in a Mesh Network
Devices in a mesh network typically fall into three categories:
Coordinator — the central element of the network, usually integrated into a hub or controller. It creates the network, manages device connections, and stores network information.
Routers — intermediate devices that forward data between other nodes. These are usually mains-powered devices such as smart plugs, bulbs, or switches. It is important to note that not every mains-powered device acts as a router. Some manufacturers implement devices that only behave as end devices, even if they are connected to constant power.
End devices — typically battery-powered devices such as sensors, buttons, or remote controls. They do not relay messages for others and instead communicate through nearby routers to conserve energy.
Advantages of Mesh Networks
Mesh networks offer several important advantages:
- Signal coverage increases because data can travel from device to device.
- The network becomes more reliable because messages can use alternative routes.
- The system is flexible and scalable — devices can be added or removed without redesigning the entire network.
Router Density
Mesh networks rely on router devices to forward messages. If there are too few routers, some devices may have poor connectivity or may lose connection completely.
For reliable operation, routers should be distributed across the home so that battery devices can reach at least one nearby router.
Different Mesh Implementations
Although the general concept of mesh networking is similar, different technologies implement it in different ways.
For example, routing behavior, device limits, and network recovery mechanisms may vary between technologies such as Zigbee, Thread, and Z-Wave.
